How Does the Microline TFC-4 Reverse Osmosis work?
The pressure from a household tap forces water through a semipermeable membrane. This membrane separates your water at the molecular level. The membrane works like a filter to isolate the contaminants, reducing them so the water becomes purer.
Prefilter: Sediment Carbon Block filter, removes chlorine and filters out larger particles protecting the membrane.
TFC Membrane: The operational center of the system. The membrane removes particles too small to be trapped by the prefilter. The membrane's microscopic pores allows Hydrogen and Oxygen molecules through, (and water is H2O). Contaminants are flushed to the drain.
Post Carbon Filter: Removes any unwanted tastes and odors.
Final Polish: After the membrane the RO water is routed to the holding tank. When you turn on your faucet and draw water from the holding tank, it than goes through its final stage of filtration, an additional carbon filter to remove any remaining tastes and odors before it reaches your glass.
All materials are FDA and/or NSF compliant
The TFC systems are tested and Certified to ANSI/NSF Standard 58 and has been tested under Industry Standard S-30091 for Total Dissolved Solids reduction and structural integrity. Water Quality Association

But my refrigerator has a purifier...
The term purification is used loosely in the water industry. The only true ways of purifying water is through Reverse Osmosis, distillation and UV treatment. The filters in most refrigerators are a small amount of granular activated carbon. Depending on your water type, this filter may not last very long and they are costly to replace. If you install a professional drinking water system in you home you can eliminate the fridge filter altogether.
Information From the Dakota County Web Site:
What has Dakota County's testing found?
In 2005, a total of 68 wells were tested for nitrate and agricultural pesticides. Nitrate, pesticides, or pesticide breakdown chemicals were detected in the water from 56 of the 68 wells (82%). Concentrations of nitrate, pesticides and their breakdown chemicals, or both, exceeded safe drinking water guidelines in 15 of the 68 wells tested (22%).
At Dakota County’s request, the Minnesota Department of Health assessed the health risk for wells with multiple contaminants. This cumulative assessment found nine of the wells had sufficiently high levels of contaminants to be a health concern..
What can I do to make my water safe?
The Environmental Protection Agency has found that a reverse osmosis treatment system with a thin-film composite membrane and activated carbon filters can effectively remove the types of contamination found in private wells in Dakota County, if the system is maintained appropriately. Sediments and naturally occurring chemicals, such as iron, can interfere with a filter systems capacity to remove nitrate and pesticides. Additional units may be required to improve the filter systems functions and provide backup safety. A water treatment company can install a system for lease or purchase, or you can purchase a system from a home improvement center and install it yourself. To ensure clean water, any water filter system should be ANSI certified and installed, operated and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
